Chiaroscuro (2)

When making the comic, especially horror comic, chiaroscuro, light and shadow, plays an important role.

As for that, the shadow make things looks not flat

However, in portraits, it gives a tense atmosphere towards the drawing.
It would be preferable to use a pen tool and mask with texture than using image trace, because image trace would result messier.
  1. Find the reference
  2. Determine which one is the shadow
  3. Use pen tool to trace
  4. Mask it with a texture picture

Story Analysis and Research

Story are divided into 3 parts
  1. Introduction
    • Where characters are introduced, who are they, what do they do
  2. Conflict
    • Where the main problem is introduced, what happen
  3. Resolution/Climax
    • How the conflict ended, how it affects the character so much and reached the climax
I decided to pick one of the parts in Monkey's Paw Part 3, because I feel like the climax of the story is here, and it could create more tension to readers.

Fig 1.1 - Story Used

For the passage I have chosen, I feel it is the climax part and it is very tense, meaning it would be a great part to be illustrated. As for that, I make sure the light was dim and make the light coming from one source to make the readers feel the tension of this specific part.

Comic Cover

Fig 3.1 - Comic Cover Attempt

  1. First Attempt
    • too much on photoshop
  2. Second Attempt
    • could be better, the shading was not neat, could add texture on the hands
  3. Third Attempt
    • I decided to add two people to explain more into the story, since the illustrated hands don't really give explanation
Fig 3.1.1 - Method used

Methods Used
  1. Pen tool
    • Using reference picture, I traced the face of the man and the woman
    • Since I want a dramatic lighting effect, I started by using black and white colors, and then proceed to coloring it
  2. Masking
    • I mask the hand for texture
  3. Spatter
    • For the background, to give a more effect, I added spatter
  4. 3D Materials
    • I adjust every brick's lighting following the light source and give it a 3d effect to be more lively.

Comic Panel

Fig 4.1 - Coloring Comic
  1. Pen tool
    • To draw shapes and also the characters
  2. Gradient tool
    • As the blending tool, to blend it smoothly, I use gradient tool, from the dark/light shade to 0% opacity
    • After so, I stylize it with feather in range 1-3 pt to make it smoother
  3. Rectangle tool
    • For most of the background I use rectangle tool, then stylize it with Diffuse Glow for texture
  4. Text tool
    • For speech bubbles

Reflections

Creating the sketch for my horror comic was quite challenging, especially when it came to illustrating the sentences and ensuring smooth transitions between panels. One of the biggest difficulties I faced was building tension within the scenes. To overcome this, I researched various horror illustrations and storytelling techniques to understand how fear and suspense are visually conveyed.

When moving on to the drawing phase in Illustrator, I encountered additional challenges, particularly with shading. Since my art direction requires a painting-like texture with minimal outlines, I had to spend extra time refining the shading to maintain depth and atmosphere. Balancing these elements while staying true to the surreal horror aesthetic was difficult but also a valuable learning experience.

Overall, this process taught me the importance of planning compositions carefully and studying different artistic approaches to improve my storytelling. While there were struggles, I feel that each challenge helped me develop my skills and gain a better understanding of visual horror storytelling.
