Poster design

Poster Example - Design doesn't always follow rules

7 Principles of Poster Design

  1. Emphasis
    • to emphasize the focal point, its all about what sticks out
    • controls hierarchy, think of what the audience wants to see first

  2. Balance and Alignment
    • everything here is balance, more organized,
    • has different weights for every element

  3. Contrast
    • different color in a design to make it stand out
    • clarity

  4. Repetition
    • creates brand identity,
    • repeated = remembered

  5. Proportion
    • size and weight in an element
    • simple elements have similar proportions

  6. Movement
    • how you see the design in flow
    • curve or flowing shapes

  7. White space
    • empty space for balance and emphasis in design

Tutorial

Students were given videos of Photography basics.

Below are the videos:

Basic Photography

  1. ISO - Camera Sensitivity Sensor - Scene
    • the higher ISO, more sensitive to light, keep it low
    • more ISO, more noise
    • outdoor (100 ISO), indoor (400 ISO), based on location.

  2. Aperture - Subject
    • The size of the opening of camera (f/stops)
    • higher number, smaller hole, less light
    • controls depth of field,  higher f/stop, large depth of field (the focus)

  3. Shutter speed - Motion Blur
    • how long the shutter is open
    • slower shutter speed means more motion blur, if faster, less blur
Image too Dark - Slower shutter speed, lower aperture, higher ISO (respectively)
Image too Light - Lower ISO, higher shutter speed, higher aperture (respectively)

Product Photography

  1. Learn the product
    • what does the client want?
    • what is the product material?
    • 50mm lens is preferred for product photography

  2. Photography Setup
    • Composition with the background, what to stand out
    • Good lighting, make sure product is clean
    • set the shutter and ISO

  3. Using properties
    • more properties to create depth to the product

  4. Editing
    • Using presets
    • Editing the exposure, highlights, shadows, hue and saturation
    • Mask to make the subject pop

Product Photography (2)

  1. Approach lighting with simplicity
    • Set up the shot
    • Background
      • making the background at certain angle would make a Tonal Range (not flat)
    • Camera placement
    • Lighting
      • Using a soft box so the lighting is not too sharp/harsh, especially when subject is reflective
