Emphasis and Contrast    : to exaggerate visual elements to make the characters stand out

Harmony                          : visual hierarchy, design should compliment each other

Expressions, poses            : clear visualization of characters personalities

Task 1 - Character Design:

Week 1 - 3

Students were tasked to make a character using the shapes provided. Our goal is to create a unique character by combining and manipulating these shapes while adhering to specific rules. This task is made to develop skills in proportion, balance, color, and composition, as well as Illustration tools.

Fig 1.1 - Vormator Shapes

Shapes should not be distorted; Make a silhouette of the character (maximum 3 or 4, also include the outline); Coloring with shadows using pathfinder and shape builder. Characters are made using the tools introduced before.

Below are the reference and sketches I made:

Fig 1.2 - Reference and Sketch

Below are the final results:

Fig 1.3 - Silhouette and Pathfinder Shape builder (11/10/24)

It is very crucial to make the silhouette to know the proportion of the overall character, especially doing it without distorting the shapes given.  The details are given afterwards for aesthetic essentials.

Reflection

It was easy to make the shapes using pen tool, though it was challenging to make the character without distorting the shapes, but I do realize that it made the character looked more proportionalIt was quite challenging to make the shadows using pathfinder, I found it easier to use the shape builder tool.

Besides finding inspirations from Pinterest, I also observe some of my friends characters and I realize that everyone came out with their own amazing ideas. It was inspiring to see how diverse and creative their designs were. Some focused on intricate details, while others emphasized bold shapes and colors. I learned a lot from observing their approaches and incorporating their ideas into my own work.
